Few chefs have done more to introduce the richness of Guyanese cuisine to international audiences than Chef Devan Rajkumar, affectionately known as Chef Dev. A proud Guyanese-Canadian with Indo-Guyanese roots, he has built an impressive career by combining classical culinary training with the vibrant flavours and traditions of his family’s heritage.

Born and raised in Toronto to Guyanese parents, Chef Dev’s earliest food memories were shaped by the aromas of curry, dhal, pepperpot, coconut choka, and the comforting dishes prepared by his grandmother. Those childhood experiences became the foundation of a culinary philosophy that celebrates culture while embracing creativity and innovation. After studying Culinary Management at George Brown College, he refined his skills in professional kitchens across Canada and internationally, working in countries including India, Dubai, Scotland, Peru, Mexico, Portugal, Pakistan, and the Turks and Caicos.

Today, Chef Dev is recognized as one of Canada’s leading culinary personalities. He has appeared regularly on Cityline, served as a judge on Food Network Canada’s Fire Masters, and has been featured on numerous television programs, festivals, and live cooking events. His engaging personality and approachable cooking style have earned him a loyal following across television and social media.

In 2024, Chef Dev released his debut cookbook, Mad Love: Big Flavors Made to Share, from South Asia to the West Indies, a celebration of the cuisines that have shaped his life. The cookbook blends Guyanese, Caribbean, South Asian, and global influences while remaining firmly rooted in the traditions of his Guyanese upbringing. It quickly became a bestseller and was shortlisted for a Gourmand World Cookbook Award.

Despite his international success, Guyana remains at the heart of Chef Dev’s work. Whether preparing pepperpot, curry, plait bread, or reinventing classic Indo-Guyanese dishes with contemporary techniques, he consistently highlights the country’s remarkable culinary heritage. Through television, books, live demonstrations, and educational outreach, he has become an ambassador for Guyanese cuisine, helping introduce its bold flavours to audiences around the world.
