Maliyah’s Kitchen: Preserving Guyanese Tradition, One Sweet Treat at a Time

Some of the best Guyanese businesses begin with a simple idea, a passion for good food, and a desire to preserve the flavours we grew up loving. Maliyah’s Kitchen is one of those success stories. What started as a family venture during the COVID-19 pandemic has grown into one of Guyana’s recognized producers of authentic traditional snacks, proving that local recipes still have a place in today’s modern marketplace.

Founded by husband and wife Mark and Alyssa Singh, Maliyah’s Kitchen was officially established in June 2020. The business was born from Alyssa’s love for cooking and the couple’s realization that there was room in the market for high quality, professionally packaged Guyanese snacks. The name “Maliyah” itself carries special meaning. It combines the names of their daughters, Marlisa and Aaliyah, reflecting the family’s desire to build something that would become a lasting legacy.

Operating from their facility on Pike Street in Georgetown, the family has remained committed to producing authentic Guyanese favourites using traditional recipes while embracing modern food production and packaging standards. Their product line includes crunchy Sal Sev, commonly known as Chicken Foot, rich Milk Powder Fudge, colourful Mithai, and their popular Black Cake, each made to capture the flavours generations of Guyanese know and love.

What sets Maliyah’s Kitchen apart is its focus on quality alongside authenticity. Rather than simply recreating familiar snacks, the company has invested in improving presentation, consistency, and food safety so their products can compete on supermarket shelves both locally and internationally. Their snacks can now be found in numerous supermarkets and retail outlets throughout Guyana, making traditional treats more accessible than ever.

That commitment to excellence has earned national recognition. Maliyah’s Kitchen became certified under the Guyana National Bureau of Standards Made in Guyana Certification Mark Programme as well as the GYS 901 Certification Programme. These certifications demonstrate that the business has met rigorous quality and food safety requirements, giving consumers added confidence in every package they purchase.

Like many successful entrepreneurs, the Singhs faced their share of challenges. Balancing family life with building a business, securing financing, understanding food safety regulations, and expanding production were all part of the journey. Through persistence and a clear vision, they transformed a small home-based operation into a respected Guyanese brand with ambitions well beyond the local market.

Today, Maliyah’s Kitchen represents more than delicious snacks. It is an example of how Guyanese entrepreneurs are adding value to traditional foods through innovation without sacrificing authenticity. Every package celebrates recipes that have been part of our culture for generations while presenting them in a way that appeals to today’s consumers.

As Guyana’s manufacturing and agro-processing sectors continue to expand, businesses like Maliyah’s Kitchen remind us that some of our greatest opportunities lie in preserving the flavours that define who we are. Whether it is a handful of crunchy Sal Sev,(chicken foot) a piece of creamy Milk Powder Fudge, colourful Mithai, or a slice of rich Black Cake, every bite tells a story of family, tradition, and the pride of creating products that are unmistakably Guyanese.

For Taste Guyana, Maliyah’s Kitchen is more than another local business. It is part of a growing movement of food entrepreneurs who are ensuring that Guyanese culinary traditions continue to thrive, one delicious treat at a time.
