A Legacy Born on the Demerara
The story of Guyanese rum dates back to the 1640s, when European settlers introduced sugar cane cultivation to the fertile lands along the Demerara River. By 1670, commercial rum production had begun, laying the foundation for what would become one of the world’s oldest rum-making traditions. During the 18th century, more than 300 sugar estates operated their own distilleries, each producing rums with distinctive flavours and unique identifying marks.
As the sugar industry consolidated over time, many estates disappeared, but their historic stills and rum-making expertise were preserved. Today, these legendary stills are housed at the Diamond Distillery on the East Bank of Demerara, ensuring that centuries of craftsmanship continue in every bottle of El Dorado.
Crafted with Historic Wooden Stills
What truly sets El Dorado apart is its use of some of the world’s last surviving wooden rum stills. These remarkable pieces of engineering—including the famous Port Mourant Double Wooden Pot Still and the Enmore Wooden Coffey Still—are more than 250 years old and remain in active production today. No other distillery in the world possesses such a unique collection of historic stills.
The combination of these traditional stills, Guyana’s tropical climate, and careful ageing in oak barrels creates rums celebrated for their rich notes of caramel, dried fruit, dark chocolate, vanilla, spice, and molasses.
The Birth of El Dorado
Although Guyana’s rum heritage spans centuries, the modern El Dorado brand was officially launched in 1992 with the introduction of the iconic 15-Year-Old Special Reserve. The brand quickly gained international recognition, helping to redefine premium rum and placing Guyana firmly on the global spirits map. Today, the range includes expressions aged from three years to over twenty-one years, each showcasing the remarkable diversity of Demerara rum.
