Eye Appeal: Why an Attractive Plate Makes Food Taste Better

You’ve probably heard the saying, “We eat with our eyes first.” It turns out there’s a lot of truth behind it.

Food presentation is defined as the art of arranging, preparing, and decorating food to enhance its visual appeal. Before we experience flavour, texture, or aroma, we notice how a dish looks. First comes appearance, then aroma, and finally taste. In today’s digital world, where restaurants, caterers, and home cooks promote their businesses online, that first visual impression has become more important than ever.

A beautifully presented dish immediately creates anticipation. It tells customers that care, attention, and pride went into preparing the meal. Whether consciously or subconsciously, we often expect attractive food to taste better.

This article isn’t meant to criticise anyone. Instead, it’s an invitation to raise the standard of food presentation across Guyana’s culinary industry. We are blessed with incredible cooks, talented chefs, and rich culinary traditions. Sometimes, however, exceptional food deserves a presentation that reflects its quality.

Every graduate of the Carnegie School of Home Economics understands that presentation is an essential part of food service. Plating is not an afterthought. It is part of the dining experience and an extension of the chef’s creativity.

One local chef who consistently demonstrates this is Delven Adams of Backyard Café. Every time he shares a photograph of one of his dishes, it immediately captures attention. His food looks vibrant, carefully plated, and incredibly inviting. His presentation tells a story before a single bite is taken.

As a member of several Guyanese food groups on Facebook, I regularly see meals prepared by caterers, restaurants, food vendors, and home businesses. Many of these dishes are no doubt delicious. Unfortunately, when customers are seeing your food online for the first time, they can only judge what is in front of them, the photograph. If the presentation doesn’t inspire confidence, many potential customers may scroll past without giving your food a chance.

Several years ago, I worked on marketing materials for a well-known East Coast restaurant and a popular Guyanese resort. Both served excellent food, but we understood that marketing begins with visual appeal. Professional photography and thoughtful presentation helped communicate the quality of the dining experience long before customers walked through the door.

In the age of Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and websites, presentation has become part of your marketing strategy. Every photo you post is either encouraging someone to place an order or convincing them to keep scrolling.

The good news is that creating beautiful food presentations doesn’t require expensive equipment or culinary school training. A few simple techniques can dramatically improve the way your food looks.

9 Simple Ways to Improve Food Presentation

1. Choose the right plate.
A plain white plate is often the best choice because it allows the food to become the centre of attention. Square and rectangular plates create a modern, restaurant-quality appearance, but traditional round plates work just as well when used thoughtfully.

2. Remember that less is more.
Avoid overcrowding the plate. Giving food room to breathe creates a cleaner, more elegant presentation.

3. Use the best camera available.
Today’s smartphones are capable of taking outstanding food photographs. Learn your camera’s portrait or food settings and keep your lens clean.

4. Make lighting your best friend.
Natural light almost always produces the most appealing food photos. Avoid harsh flash photography whenever possible.

5. Get closer.
Fill the frame with the food. A close-up shot with a softly blurred background helps your dish become the focal point.

6. Add height and dimension.
Instead of spreading food across the plate, think vertically. Layering ingredients and creating height adds elegance and visual interest.

7. Skip the foil containers.
While they may be practical for transport, foil containers rarely showcase food at its best. If you’re promoting your business online, transfer the meal to attractive serving ware before taking photographs whenever possible.

8. Garnish with purpose.
A sprig of fresh herbs, colourful vegetables, citrus slices, or edible flowers can instantly brighten a plate. Garnishes should complement the dish, not distract from it.

9. Be creative.
Food doesn’t always have to be served on a traditional plate. Wooden boards, slate, cast-iron skillets, banana leaves, and rustic serving dishes can all add character and enhance the overall presentation. Experiment and develop a style that reflects your brand.

Presentation Is Part of the Experience

Great food deserves great presentation.

Whether you’re a professional chef, restaurant owner, caterer, food vendor, or passionate home cook, the effort you put into plating can make the difference between someone scrolling past your photo and someone placing an order.

Presentation doesn’t change the flavour of the food, but it changes expectations. It creates excitement. It tells customers that quality matters. And in today’s highly visual world, that first impression can be just as important as the last bite.

At Taste Guyana, we celebrate not only the incredible flavours of our country but also the creativity, pride, and artistry behind every dish. After all, the journey to a memorable meal begins with what we see.
