Metemgee

Few dishes are as comforting or as uniquely Guyanese as Metemgee. Rich, creamy, and deeply satisfying, this beloved one-pot meal brings together ground provisions such as cassava, eddoes, sweet potatoes, plantains, and (Duff) dumplings, all simmered in seasoned coconut milk and traditionally served with salted fish, fresh fish, or stewed meat. Rooted in Indigenous ingredients and shaped by African culinary traditions, Metemgee is a beautiful reflection of Guyana's cultural heritage. Every spoonful celebrates the resourcefulness, resilience, and shared history that have made it a cherished favourite in homes across the country. Whether enjoyed as a hearty family meal or during Emancipation celebrations, Metemgee remains one of the true tastes of Guyana.
